The Polish surname Lobacz is believed by etymologists
to be of three origins. Firstly, the surname Lobacz is of patronymic
origin, from the first names of the father of the initial bearer. In
this instance, the surname Lobacz is a variant of the Polish surname
Lupowitz, meaning “the son of Lupos”, meaning “wolf”, as well as being a
variant of Rumanian surname Lupescu, meaning “the son of Lup”, also
meaning “wolf”. Alternatively, the surname Lobacz is of nickname origin,
from a physical characteristic or personal attribute of the initial
bearer. Here, the surname is a nickname for “one who is crafty or
dangerous person”, like a wolf. Wolves were relatively common at the
time when most surnames were formed, as there still existed large tracks
of uncleared forest. Finally, the surname Lobacz is of occupational
origin, from the trade or profession of the father of the initial bearer
of the name as a surname. In this case, the surname Lobacz is derived
from the Polish word “Lubaszka” meaning “a variaty of plum”, thus
denoting “one who grew or sold plums”.
Other variants of the surname Lobacz are Lubicz, Lopaczynski and
Lobaczewski. Reference to this surname or to a variant includes a record
of bearers of the surname Lobaczewski who were members of parliament
from the region of Volynia and partook in the last session of parliament
held in Gradow. The following coat of arms was widespread mostly in the
regions ofBrezesc, Dobrzyn, Sieradz, Sandomierz, Inowroclaw Lublin,
Leczyca, Poznan and in Rawa. The most ancient seal dates from 1348 and
the first record from 1388.
